The visible particulate issue in such smokes is mostly made up of carbon (soot). Other particulates may be made up of drops of condensed tar, or sound particles of ash. The presence of metals in the fuel yields particles of steel oxides. Particles of inorganic salts might also be formed, e.g. ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, or sodium chloride.
